Trojans earn playoff spot

Brandon Vaughn had a big weekend at the plate for the Trojans

For the fourth consecutive year the Trinidad State baseball team earned a spot in the Region IX baseball playoffs, they are one of only two teams to make the playoffs every year since the new four-team format took effect.

This week’s action started on a down note as the Trojans fell in a nine-inning contest in Lamar on Wednesday. The Trojans led 3-2 after six innings but had the game get away late falling by a final of 4-3. That was the third time this season the Trojans had a late lead against the Lopes and had it get away. Gavin Purvis had a two-run homerun and Hans Ask went 2 for 3 with a run scored to lead the Trojans.

“That was a tough loss again,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “We had chances and a late lead again and didn't finish it out. Not the way we wanted to start a nine game road stretch but we'll keep at it. We played well enough to win but we have to finish things, especially against a solid team like Lamar.”

The Trojans headed north on Friday to face McCook sweeping a doubleheader with the Indians. The first game saw David Henrie again dominate on the hill as he tossed his fifth complete game of the season. He struck out six while picking up the 8-2 win. Brandon Vaughn, who had a huge weekend, and Wade Beauvais each homered and combined for six RBI’s.

In the second game Rhys Niit picked up his eleventh win of the season as the Trojan bats pounded the Indians for the 15-7 win. Vaughn stayed hot at the plate going 5 for 5, falling just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. He finished with three singles, a triple and a homerun.

The Trojan bus headed back to Colorado on Saturday with a stop in Sterling for a doubleheader with the Plainsmen from Northeastern Junior College. Kevin Hand picked up his seventh win as he struck out five and only allowed three hits in the complete game 7-1 win. Leadoff man Adam Anderson went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI’s to lead the offense.

The final game of the trip saw the Trojans fall to the Plainsmen 7-4. Zack Chavez went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for Trinidad. Vaughn finished up his hot-hitting weekend going 2 for 3. His weekend totals were 12 for 16 at the plate with six runs scored, a double, a triple, two homeruns and eight RBI’s. He also swiped one base.

“We had a productive trip winning three out of four,” said Douglas. “We were fairly consistent on the mound and defensively. We put together some good at-bats all weekend.“

The Trojans (34-18 17-9) have four Region IX games left. This Friday and Saturday they go to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to face off with Western Nebraska (15-29 8-16). Trinidad currently needs one win, or an Otero loss, to clinch the number two seed and the right to host a first round playoff series. Lamar, Trinidad and Otero have clinched but everyone in the region is still alive for a playoff spot with McCook, Western Nebraska and Northeastern all battling for the last spot. The first round of the playoffs will start May 6.
