Future bright despite playoff loss
The injury plagued 2011 baseball season came to a close the first weekend of May with a 2-1 series loss to Otero in the Region IX playoffs. Despite having quite a few starters down with season ending or long-term nagging injuries the Trojans still finished with a 36-23 record and with a playoff spot for the fourth straight season. TSJC heads into the off-season with high hopes for the future as they will return Bryer Mueller and Max Martinez from medical red-shirts as well as three Region IX First-Teamers in Hans Ask, Brandon Vaughn and Chayse Marion.
The final series started in La Junta on Saturday with the Trojans getting a big 4-3 win in the first game. The win was a good start to the series but Trinidad didn’t come away total unscathed. First baseman Chayse Marion, who had 3 RBI’s in the game, was the latest to go on the injured list as he tweaked his knee in the contest.
The series continued on Sunday with the first game going true to form. It was another low scoring, defensive battle which had characterized the season series between these two teams all year. It was tight all the way with the Trojans trailing by one through six innings. The Rattlers pulled away late to even the series at 1-1 with a 7-3 win.
The deciding game three looked like it was going to follow the same low scoring mold with Trinidad holding a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth. Otero managed to blow it open down the stretch and finished the series with a 15-4 win.
“It was a disappointed way to end the season for our players,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “We overcame lots of stuff this year and hung tough to put up 36 wins. We pride ourselves on consistency and toughness and this group was no different, I enjoyed coaching these guys again.”
“It always seemed we were dealing with something whether it was season ending injuries to key guys or the situation at the end of the season (McCook forfeiting games to Otero) which made us have to go to La Junta. Otero is tough there. I think they only had six losses at home all year and three were to us. We won the season series 5-4 but at the end of the day they got the ones that matter most.”
Trinidad will lose nine sophomores, including Region IX second team selections Wade Beauvais and Gavin Purvis. They will need to replace a good portion of the pitching staff but they will return a very solid core.
“Our line-up was full of freshman most days and that makes the future look bright with the return of Mueller and Martinez,’ said Douglas. “The thing I was most proud of is how tight our team was again, there is definitely a tradition here and a ‘Trojan’ way of doing things that these guys carried on from past teams.”
