Trojans open season
It might be hard to believe as the snowflakes fly but baseball is underway at Trinidad State Junior College. The TSJC Trojan baseball team got their season going in Thatcher Arizona over the weekend against Eastern Arizona College going 1-2 over the three game series.

Bryer Mueller returned from a season ending injury in 2011 to lead the Trojans to a 7-3 win going 4-6 with two doubles and four RBI’s
The bats never got going for game one of the series on Friday. The Trojans managed just three hits as they were shutout 4-0 by the Gila Monsters. Zac Wittmus was charged with the loss in his first college start despite only giving up a pair of earned runs over four innings while striking out three. The Trojan pen held the Monsters scoreless for the final two innings but the bats couldn’t get any runs around. Hans Ask, Chayse Marion and Zach Chaves had Trinidad’s only hits in the game.
The second game on Friday had a similar tone as errors and the lack of offense doomed TSJC to a 5-1 defeat. Five pitchers combined to hold the Gila’s to just two hits but and pair of errors and five walks allowed five runs to cross. Starter Tanner Ernst was charged with the defeat. Trinidad had two doubles in the game but only managed to bring one run around when Chayse Marion scored.
On Saturday the teams played a single nine inning game and the Trojans came out on top 7-3. Bryer Mueller had four rbi’s to lead the offensive charge that had seven hits including four doubles. Starter Eric Perry struck out three over four innings work to earn the win. Six pitchers worked the game holding EAC to just three runs on five hits. Ben Williams was credited with the save.
“It was a typical first series,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “We had some guys too juiced and a couple a bit tight. Offensively we were over swinging the entire first day. The second day we looked pretty good. Defensively we did not communicate as much as I’d like but we cleaned it up in the last game. Our pitching was impressive. We used lots of guys to see what some can do and we saw some good stuff. We went 1-2 and that did not help us meet any goals for the week. We'll try it again this week.”
The Trojans (1-2) will head to Roswell, New Mexico this weekend for a four game set with NMMI (0-4). Trinidad will then face CSU Fort Collins at Central Park on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19 for a pair of doubleheaders with the Ram club team.
