TSJC picked up win number 17 on sophomore day this past Saturday against Lamar but more importantly secured the number three spot in the region and the third seed in the upcoming Region IX Tournament. The Trojans had the lead on the scoreboard almost the entire day as they dominated the Lopes winning in straight sets by scores of 29-27, 25-21 and 25-16. Statistically Jacinta Hoffpauir led the hitters with nine kills. Kaylee Johnson, always a force in the middle, had eight blocks. Libero Capri Rino had 26 digs and sophomore setter Sydney Wilson led the way with 16 assists.

“It was nice to get a win for our last home match against Lamar to seal the third place spot for the regional tournament,” commented Coach Ellen McGill. “The Region IX South is a tough region to compete in. We fought hard for that third place spot all season long. We were neck and neck with Lamar and Otero in regional play. They are tough opponents. Hopefully we will finish strong this weekend in the Region IX Tournament.”

She is also leading the team in hitting percentage with an average .222 on the season. “We are one of the strongest blocking teams in the region,” said McGill. “Kaylee is ranked second in the region for blocks, Alyssa (Hernandez) is ranked fourth and Chelesa (Butler) is ranked sixth.

The Trojans (17-20 5-5) will face McCook at 5 p.m. this Thursday. They will then try to work their way through the double-elimination bracket that features two of the best teams in the nation (#2 Western Nebraska and #14 Northeastern).
