Golfers look for fifth straight title

TSJC claimed their fourth straight Region IX crown in 2011
The Trojan golf team begins 2011 with high hopes of repeating as Region IX Champions for the fifth straight year.
Returning three players with tournament experience should work in their favor as they head into the 2011-2012 season. Expected to lead the way for TSJC is Kaelen Gunderson from Steamboat Springs. Kaelen ended up the season with a 75.6 tournament stroke average (TSA), which falls into the top 60 nationally. He was the top Trojan in last year’s National Tournament in Odessa, TX finishing in the top 50 out of 119 players in the tournament. Also expected to show leadership for the Trojans is Kyle Roll from Westminster (77.6 TSA) and Mike Marquez from Albuquerque, NM (76.3 TSA).
A new group of freshman will also bring some impressive credentials to the table. Listed in the order that they committed to the program are Josh Woodworth from Palmer Ridge High School in Colorado Springs, Chris Black from Montezuma-Cortez High School Cortez, Justin Hume from Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs and the last Trojan to commit to TSJC is local product, Joe Apache from Raton High School in Raton, NM.
According to fourth year coach Rich Holden, “This is probably the most depth and potential that Trinidad State Junior College golf has had in a long time. How they handle the pressure associated with that will be fun to watch this year.”
The fall season kicks off with a tournament in Sterling, Colorado on Thursday and Friday August 25 and 26.
