Trojans take NJC Invitational
The Trinidad State golf team took their first step toward their fifth straight Region IX title cruising to a 48 stroke victory this past weekend at the NJC Invitational in Sterling, Colorado. The Trojans were led by freshman Joe Apache who claimed the tournament championship by 3 strokes over teammate Chris Black. TSJC’s Kaelen Gunderson and Josh Woodworth tied for fourth place eight strokes out of first. Michael Marquez was sixth and Kyle Roll ended up seventh.
The Trojans shot 601 as a team to finish well in front of the hosting plainsmen from Northeastern. McCook was a close third followed by Lamar.
“I was very impressed with the leadership that we got from our sophomores,” said Coach Rich Holden. “All three of them can play much better than they did, however they all stepped up, hung in, and put a mid-70 on the board at least one of the days. Our Freshmen were outstanding for the first tournament.”
TSJC will continue the fall season this weekend in McCook, Nebraska.
“McCook is the toughest course in the Region,” said Holden. “Playing there next week will give us a better idea of where we stand nationally.”
The fall season kicks off with a tournament in Sterling, Colorado on Thursday and Friday August 25 and 26.
