Trojan Golfers Continue Hot Play
Chris Black’s outstanding 66 on the first day of the Otero/Lamar Invitational helped propel the Trojan freshman to a tie for the Tournament championship with Eastern Wyoming’s Zach Waxler as the Trojans claimed their third straight tournament. TSJC had to come from behind Eastern Wyoming on day two in Lamar to claim the Tournament by nine strokes.
Kaelen Gunderson finished the tournament in fourth with a 144. Teammates Kyle Roll, Joe Apache, Josh Woodworth and Michael Marquez all finished in the top 12 spots.
“I was very happy to see Region IX golf take a big step forward this past tournament,” commented Coach Rich Holden. “What the Trojans did this week (The 296 on day two in Lamar) was very impressive. It was the first time in about three years that we trailed after the first day. We actually put some pretty solid numbers up the first day, but EWC really stepped up their game. I was proud of Chris Black hanging in after a 66 on the first day to tie for the top individual spot overall in the tournament. It speaks well for the Trojans that he had to play outside of the team scoring based on qualification points.”
TSJC continued playing well at the Peaks Classic at Grandote in La Veta this past Sunday thru Tuesday. Playing against all four-year schools the Trojans held their own finishing in fourth place behind Wayland Baptist, CSU Pueblo and Mines. 42 golfers from 10 schools competed over the three day tournament.
Josh Woodworth shot a 2-over 218 to claim fifth place overall. Gunderson’s +9 was good enough for twelfth overall.
TSJC will be at Eastern Wyoming this weekend trying to keep their winning streak at Region IX tournaments alive against the tough Lancer Squad. They will then return home to host the final tournament of the fall season on September 22-23.
