Trojan guard McArthur Gaines elevates above a Laramie defender during Friday’s contest against the Eagles

Region IX foes North Platte and Laramie County came to Trinidad last weekend for a pair of games and despite the fact that the Trojans led most of the way in both games the visiting teams left Scott Gym with a pair of victories.

On Friday evening the Trojans tore out of the gate to take an early 15 point lead that they would hold for the entire first half. The Eagles got some momentum late but the Trojans led 45-30 at the break. Laramie wasted no time in the second half cutting into the margin but Trinidad still clung to a 64-60 lead with less than five minutes to play. Another run gave the Eagles a 67-66 lead with two minutes on the clock. The Trojans missed their shots late and the Eagles didn’t as Laramie held on for the 74-71 win.

Trinidad State guard Bryant Evans burns past a Knight defender

Hot shooting guards Devonte Malcolm and Phil Watts led the Trojans in scoring combining for 25 points. Devonte Upson finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds and Terrence Smith brought down 7 boards.

On Saturday afternoon the Trojans faced off with North Platte. Trinidad again took an early lead going up 16-7 with just a couple of minutes off the clock. The Knights roared back quickly to take a 21-18 lead midway through the first half. The teams continued to trade baskets with North Platte gaining a 42-37 lead at the break.

In the second half the Trojans had a quick start retaking the lead 51-50 with only seven minutes gone off the clock. The teams exchanged baskets for the next ten minutes but again it got away from the Trojans late as North Platte pulled away for the 88-80 win.

Sophomore Juhreece Thompson put in a huge performance with 21 points and 9 boards to lead the Trojans. Devonte Malcolm was again hot from the outside drilling six 3-pointers and point guard Bryant Evans ran the show with 11 points and 9 assists.

The Trojans (5-13 0-4) will be on the road this weekend with Region IX games against Lamar and Northeastern. They will return on Tuesday, January 31 to face Air Force Prep at 7 p.m. The Lady Trojans, who were off this weekend, will open play that evening with a game against Clarendon College at 5 p.m.
