Trojans take series in Roswell
The TSJC baseball team had a strong showing in Roswell, New Mexico over the weekend taking three of four games against the New Mexico Military Institute.
The first game on Saturday saw sophomore Bo McLavey take the hill for the Trojans. McLavey shut the Broncos down through six solid innings of work allowing just two hits. The Trojans got all of their offense in the fourth inning when they put up four runs. NMMI got two early runs in the seventh but freshman Rhys Niit came in to slam to the door and preserve the 4-2 victory. McLavey earned his first win of the season and Nick Bachono went 2-2 with a pair of RBI’s.
Game two saw Kevin Hand toss six shutout innings while allowing only four hits. Jordan Romine pitched a scoreless seventh as the Trojans rolled to a 5-0 shutout win. Colin Bailey went 4-4 with 2 RBI’s and 3 stolen bases to help propel the Trojan offense.
The cold moved in on Sunday and the Trojan bats froze up in the first game as the Trojans fell 2-1. David Henry started for the Trojans giving up one run in four innings of work. Joey Capistran was charged with the loss giving up a hard earned run on an infield hit in the seventh. He also struck out two batters in the inning. Offensively the Trojans only had two hits in the contest.
The bats did warm again in the final game of the series as they put up seven runs on eight hits. Pitcher Loran Carosella picked up the win going four strong scoreless innings as the Trojans cruised to a 7-2 win. Wade Beauvais got the Trojans going with a two-run triple and Derek DiCarlo went 2-4 with a double in the contest.
“Winning three of four anywhere is tough to do,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “NMMI has as deep a program as I’ve seen in my ten years playing them. They will have a solid season, Coach Simmermacher and his staff have improved that program each season they have been there. The second day was cold and a tough day to hit. Our guys hung in there pretty well. Our pitching and defense was fairly solid with the exception of a couple flinches in game three. We need to be more consistent at the plate and produce more positive at-bats this week. CSU has a solid team in all four aspects, pitching, defense, hitting and base running, and are well coached.”
The CSU Rams will be in town this weekend for a four game series with the Trojans. The Rams are the two time defending national champions for club ball teams and will return another solid team to face the Trojans. The Trojans are now 4-3 on the season. Game times this weekend are 12:30 for both Saturday and Sunday.
