Trojans drop first home series

McLavey throws in game oneWith a lot of hard work and extra hours the Trinidad State baseball coaching staff and players got the field at Central park ready to play last weekend for a series against Colorado State. The hard work paid off as the games went on as scheduled; unfortunately the Trojans fell to the Rams in three tight contests to fall to 4-6 on the season.

Bo McLavey took the hill for the Trojans and dominated the two-time National Club-Ball champions for the first six innings. The Trojans got on the board early on an RBI by Bryer Mueller and then added an insurance run late to lead 2-0 heading into the seventh. The game got away from Trinidad in the seventh as the Rams brought three runs across. CSU held on in the seventh for the 3-2 win.

In the second game Rams starter, senior Bobby Moller, shut the Trojans down through the first five innings as his teammate’s climbed out to a 5-0 advantage. The Trojans finally got a hit in the sixth as Tyler Jensen doubled down the line. Jensen would score in the three-run inning as the Trojans closed the gap. They would get no closer however falling by a final score of 6-3.

“Losing game one the way we did hurt a bit,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “It was a good but tough learning experience. We had them beat with three outs to go. Hopefully we will remember how that felt.”

“Our youth and inexperience came out a bit for the start of game two. I think we let the game one loss linger for a few innings before we got involved, which is another valuable lesson. Win or lose, you have to have a short memory when playing doubleheaders. We trailed 5-0 before we finally got after it a bit offensively and chased the starter, who was as good as anyone we will face this year. We had the tying run at the plate in the seventh with no outs and didn't get it done.”

On Sunday, despite the snow and low temperatures the teams battled again. The score was close most of the way with CSU up 1-0 after five. Again the Trojans fell to the Rams, this time by a score of 3-0. Game four was cancelled due to the bad weather conditions.

Bryer Mueller fields a ball at third“Game three was one of those deals of who was going to hang in longer with the weather and who was going to make the first mistake. It so happened to be us,” said Douglas. “We played hard and they were better than us this series. We have a lot of guys struggling with the bat who simply need to get more at-bats. The pitching and defense are showing signs of improvement which is a huge positive for us.”

“We played hard all three games. CSU is solid. They are a legitimate four year program. Their arms were all good and their line-up was solid. They are well coached and on their way to another national championship run in the club stuff.”

“It was good experience for our guys to face older, more experienced players. Definitely tells you a lot about yourself and where you need to improve as a coach and player.”

“We are what are record says at 4-6. We’ve been in every ball game and will have to learn to add to leads and finish out games. This is an inexperienced group who is gaining valuable experience each time out. That is one of the reasons we worked so hard on the field this week to get out and play, to gain experience. We have 46 games to get better and to see if we are a playoff team or not.”

The Trojans games against Dodge City, scheduled for Tuesday, have been postponed. The Luna series, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, are still on schedule.
