Lopes sweep Trojans

The Trojan baseball team played four tough, tight games against region leading Lamar but was unable to bring back a win over the weekend. The Lopes only outscored the Trojans by six runs combined in the four games but it was enough for the sweep.

On Saturday the Trojans fell by scores of 3-1 and 1-0. On Sunday the Trojans got the bats going early jumping out to a 7-0 lead. In their final at-bat the Lopes brought eight runs across to walk off with the 8-7 win. Bo McLavey went six scoreless innings for the no-decision. Jordan Romine and Chad Leedholm pitched the seventh with Leedholm being charged with the loss.

“Definitely one of the tougher losses that we have suffered in my ten years here,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “Just the timing of it and how well we played the game for six innings. We dominated them in every aspect until the seventh. Bo pitched his guts out. Just when you think you've seen it all in this game, something new happens. I felt bad for Jordan and Chad, it just got away from them. They'll both bounce back. They are solid young men.”

Reeling from the tough loss in game three the Trojans tried to bounce back but were unable to bring any runs across. Lamar managed two runs in the fifth to claim the 2-0 win. Rhys Niit was charged with the loss.

“Rhyss showed me some things about his make up today and I think our team responded with a pretty good effort after a tough loss in the first game of the day,” said Douglas. “We played tough in the series but came up with nothing as far as ‘W’s. We’ll stick together and find a way for this to make us better and tighter as a team. Lamar has a good team and are worthy of being where they are in the standings. We'll get back at it this week and see what happens.”

The Trojans will play their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday when they host Dodge City at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader. They will then travel to Raton to face Luna Community College in a nine inning contest. This weekend the Trojans will travel to McCook for a key series as far as the Region IX playoff picture is concerned.
