Trojans secure playoff spot
Three years ago the Empire Conference switched their playoff structure from a double elimination tournament to individual playoff series’ that only the top four teams in the conference get to compete in. Trinidad State and Lamar are the only teams to have made the playoffs every year since the switch. This year Lamar has already claimed the top spot. This past weekend Western Nebraska, Trinidad State and McCook all punched their postseason passes.
Trinidad secured their spot with a win over McCook in their first game on Sunday. The teams were scoreless through four innings but the Trojans brought six runs across in the final three innings and held off a late Indian comeback to claim the 6-5 win. David Henrie got the win for the Trojans. In the second game of the double header the Trojans were only able to generate one run and ended up falling 2-1. Bo McLavey was charged with the loss despite another good showing on the mound.
“It was good to get the first goal out of the way in making the playoffs,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “We need to try and move up the ladder as much as possible now.”
Trying to improve their tournament seeding the Trojans came out firing on all cylinders as they jumped on the Indians for four runs in the first inning of Monday’s first game. Kevin Hand pitched six shutout innings to get the victory in the Trojans 9-2 win. McCook, who had won nine straight going into the series answered right back with a 9-1 victory of their own in the final game of the series.
TSJC won the season series with McCook 4-2 which could prove to be important if the teams end up tied for a playoff spot.
“We did a good job for the most part in slowing down the hottest team in the conference by getting two wins in a tough place to play,” commented Coach Douglas. “It was good to clinch a playoff berth and get that out of the way but we still have some things to accomplish with three conference games left.”
“A season is full of opportunities to take stuff and give some away. There isn't much left to take or give away with only three conference games remaining. We still have some goals to achieve with the little that is left and it all goes off of what type of baseball we play daily.”
TSJC has a game with Otero, in La Junta, on Wednesday and a pair of games in Scottsbluff against Western Nebraska on Saturday. The outcome of this weekend’s games will determine the second, third and fourth seeds heading into the tournament the first week of May.
