Trojans prepare for playoffs
A split in Scottsbluff this past Saturday means the Trojans will be the third seed in this year’s baseball playoffs and will return to Scottsbluff to face Western Nebraska in the first round. McCook will travel to Lamar in the other playoff series.
TSJC led the first game 2-0 on Saturday but gave up four runs in the fifth to fall to the Cougars 4-2. In the second game David Henrie shut Western down as the Trojans claimed an 8-2 victory.
The two teams will play a best-of-three series starting this Friday. One nine inning game will be played Friday and one on Saturday. If the teams split those games another game will be played on Sunday.
“It will be a good series this weekend in Scottsbluff,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “Both teams got a good look at each other this past weekend so we both know what to expect. They won the season series 4-2 so we'll go in as an underdog for sure.”
“Our group cannot be considered inexperienced anymore. We'll have 56 games under our belts and a whole bunch of experience once this series starts. It'll come down to who pitches and plays defense better. Routine, ordinary things, will decide this series. It'll be tough up there but we'll be prepared and we'll see if we can win two before we lose two.”
When the Trojans defeated Luna 10-0 in Raton on April 22 Coach Douglas reached a coaching milestone with his 300 victory at Trinidad State. The win moved Douglas’ career mark to 300-270-1 overall, with a good deal of those wins coming in the past five years as he led the Trojans to a 177-122 mark. This includes having over 30 wins in each of those past five seasons. The always humble coach doesn’t get too excited with his milestone stating that it, “Just shows that I have been here a long time”.
The Trojans (32-23) will play a non-region game against CSU on Wednesday in Fort Collins before heading to the playoffs this weekend in Scottsbluff.
