Trojans fall in Playoffs
The Trojan baseball team wrapped up the 2010 season with a hard fought playoff series in Scottsbluff falling to the Cougars of Western Nebraska in the Region IX playoffs.
This first game of the three game series got off to a good start as the Trojans struck for a run early. Western quickly answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Trojans battled hard for the remaining eight innings but never brought another run around falling by a final score of 5-1.
“We were a bit tight early on and it proved to be the difference,” said Coach Scott Douglas. “Once things settled down we played fairly well. We had trouble figuring out their left handed pitcher (Tim Beard) all season.”
Play resumed on Saturday with a wild, back and forth slugfest. The Trojans struck first again but Western fought back. Each time the Cougars closed the gap the Trojans answered. TSJC went on to a 7-6 victory. Bo McLavey picked up his sixth win of the season going seven innings. Kevin Hand got the save for the Trojans.
“I was proud of our guys in the way they handled the pressure of facing elimination,” commented Douglas. “We made some big plays defensively all game long.”
The Trojans fell again in the final game of the series by a score of 10-7. Trinidad led 1-0 early but quickly found themselves trailing 4-1. The Trojans rallied to retake the lead 7-4 but couldn’t hold on as Western scored four runs in their final two at-bats to claim the playoff victory.
“Playoff baseball brings a whole different type of pressure and I think our younger guys gained valuable experience,” commented Coach Douglas. “Being on the road as long as we were might have proved to be a bit too much. We did everything we could to stay fresh but it just didn't work out this time. This group of guys played hard for me all year long and scrapped right to the end. That is all you can ask for as a coach.”
The Trojans finished the season with a 33-25-1 mark. It was their fifth straight season with more than 30 wins as well as their fifth straight winning season. The Trojans will lose nine sophomores including pitchers Bo McLavey, Jordan Romine, Loran Carosella, Chad Leedholm and Tommy Polson, infielders Derek DiCarlo and Vinnie Mattivi, catcher Jake Anderson and outfielder Phil Bailey.
“I learned a lot again this season and have quite a bit of stuff to evaluate including myself,” said Douglas. “There is always room for improvement. We have a good core of guys coming back and a solid group coming in. In three months we'll start to get it all in place to try it again. It is always my hope and priority goal that our players leave here more mature and better people. I am confident that we accomplished that again. I was privileged to be a part of some pretty solid guys lives for a couple of years.”
