Trojans host Eagles with title on the line

A share of the Region IX South title as well as huge playoff implications are on the line this Thursday evening as the Trojans host Laramie County at Scott Gym. A win will give the Trojans a share of a four way tie for the sub-region title for the second straight season. They shared the title with Northeastern last year. A loss drops TSJC to fourth place behind Laramie, Northeastern and Lamar. The final order of the sub-region determines seeding in the Region IX tournament.

The Trojans needed overtime to defeat Laramie 91-84 in Cheyenne back in January. The Eagles have been a roll as of late winning their last eight, including five straight on the road. The Trojans dropped a tough one in Lamar on Saturday, 63-62, but rebounded in La Junta on Tuesday defeating the Rattlers 87-75.

It was a low scoring game against the Lopes with the teams heading into the half tied at 27. In the second half Lamar led by as many as nine points but Trinidad closed the gap to one with six minutes to play. Lamar extended the lead again but the Trojans cut it to one with 43 seconds left when Shane Burrell scored on a put back. Lamar held on to the ball for most of the shot clock and turned it over with 8 seconds left. Lamar knocked the ball out of bounds on the Trinidad end at the 2 second mark. One last attempt fell short to give Lamar the 63-62 win.

Burrell led Trinidad with 23 points and Marqus Richards add 16.

On Tuesday the Trojans headed to La Junta in a must win game to stay in the title picture. The Rattlers, although already eliminated from the playoffs, gave a huge effort. Trinidad State took a nine point lead early in the game and extended it to as many as thirteen early in the second half.

The Rattlers never gave up, cutting the lead to four points midway through the second half. They would never get it any closer than that. TSJC hit several foul shots down the stretch to secure the 12 point win.

“It was a fun night of basketball,” remarked Coach Rich Holden. “We played just about our best basketball of the season last night. Otero had nothing to play for but it is a tribute to the efforts of Coach Reed that they played so hard and never gave in.”

Richards had 24 points to lead all scorers. Devon Manning had 16 points on 3 for 4 shooting from the 3-point line. Koree Ross, Justin Lindsey and Burrell each contributed 12 points. Otero’s Matt Peeler had 15 points to go along with 17 rebounds.

So the stage is set for Thursday evening at Scott Gym. The 17-11 Trojans will take on the 18-10 Golden Eagles to determine the outcome of the sub region as well as seeding in the Region IX tournament in early March. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sub Region Standings
