TSJC sweeps Rough Riders

The Trinidad State baseball squad swept the Luna College Rough Riders in a series that was moved to Runyon Field in Pueblo because of the wet conditions in Trinidad last weekend.

The Trojans got a good start to the series when pitcher Bo McLavey went six shutout innings to pick up the 7-0 win. TSJC got all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth.

“Both starters were solid,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “Their guy looked like he got a bit tired late and we finally got to him. They had a few chances earlier and we got out of those jams. It was good to see. Those were the same jams that we didn't get out of last week.”

Bryer Mueller had the hot bat for the Trojans in game two on Friday clearing the bases a couple of times and falling just a homerun short of the cycle. Fueled by Mueller the Trojans took an early 10-2 lead and held on for a 10-6 final. Kevin Hand picked up the win and Chad Leedholm pitched a scoreless seventh to finish the contest.

“Our hitters were on time more and more as the day progressed,” said Douglas. “It was good to see some guys clutch up with runners in scoring position. Luna scratched back into it but Chad slammed the door in the seventh.”

On Saturday the Trojan pitching staff combined for their second shutout of the series. Loran Carosella went five innings, Leedholm pitched the sixth and Jordan Romine picked of the save with a scoreless seventh. TSJC got a run in the third and two more in the fifth for the 3-0 win.

In the final game of the series the Trojans got three hits from Adam Anderson and a two-out, bases loaded pinch hit by Matt Frederick to cruise to an 8-5 win. David Henrie was credited with the victory.

“Getting a four game sweep against anyone anymore is tough to do, especially against a team like Luna,” commented Douglas. “Two of the games were tight into the middle frames and when we had bigger leads they chipped away at them. We made some strides from last week. Our guys were focused and did lots of the ordinary routine stuff well. Our hitters looked better and we produced better at-bat's as a whole. We had a winning month and gained some valuable experience along the way. We'll see what this first week of March brings.”

The Trojans are now 8-6 and will travel to Scottsbluff on Saturday to get Region IX play started against Western Nebraska.
