Lady Trojans open home stand with five wins

It was a great weekend of softball for the Trinidad State Junior College ladies softball team as they picked up five conference wins, two from McCook Community College on Saturday and three from Dawson Community College on Sunday, improving their season record to 9-5.

"The team really hit the ball this past weekend. All of our hard work getting the field ready because of all the snow we had paid off," TSJC coach Steve Swazo said. "It was nice to finally play some games after losing so many weekends of games due to the weather."

On Saturday, the Trojans swept the Lady Indians from McCook by the scores of 12-4 and 10-2, both games ending in five innings because of the 8-run rule. In the first game sophomore Jessica Apodaca had the hot bat hitting a 3-run homerun in the first inning and then connecting for a grandslam homerun in the fourth inning to put the game away. Apodaca finished the game with 7 RBI’s. Vanessa Brogdon was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI’s and two doubles, Amanda Snyder was a perfect 3-for-3 and Shelbi Long went 2-for-3 with a double. That was all the run support pitcher Jordyn Randolph needed as she held the Indians to six hits and four runs to pick up the victory.

In game two, Trinidad jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, the big blow coming from Cecely Rodriguez with a 3-run homerun in the third inning. Brogdon also had a 3-run double that cleared the bases as well. Chelsea Blais and Amanda Snyder were a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate. Pitcher Sara Permenter went five solid innings allowing two runs off two hits with four strikeouts for the victory.

“We had eight extra base hits in the doubleheader with three homeruns," Swazo said. "We hit very well and made good contact. Our pitching was excellent in both games."

On Sunday, Trinidad hosted Dawson Community College of Glendive, Montana for a three-game series and came away with three wins: 8-0, 15-0 and 14-2. All three games ending on the mercy rule of five innings.

In the first game, it was a 2-run double by Leah Hanson that put the home team on the scoreboard first and they never looked back. TSJC scored one run in the second and four runs in the fourth to pull away. Doubles by Vanessa Brogdon, Cecely Rodriguez, Shelbi Long, and Katie Kerr fueled the runs. Jordyn Randolph picked up her fifth victory of the season pitching a 2-hit shutout.

In the second game, TSJC jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead and finished with a 15-0 victory in five innings. Big hits in the game were homeruns from Cecely Rodriguez and Krysten Lopez. The Lady Trojans collected 12 hits in the game with Jordyn Randolph, Ariel Navarro, Cecely Rodriguez, and Amanda Snyder each leading the way with two hits in the contest. Jessica Apodaca threw a one-hit shutout for her first win of the season with five strikeouts.

The final game of the day saw the Trojans connect for 14 runs off 14 hits that included homeruns from Leah Hanson, Jessica Apodaca and Cecely Rodriguez in the 14-2 victory over the Lady Bucs. Pitcher Sara Permenter pitched five solid innings only allowing two runs off of three hits for her third win on the hill.

"Our girls knew how important all these games were since they were conference games and they answered the call offensively and also defensively," Swazo said. "We hit the ball like we are capable of and our pitchers threw great. Now we just need to feed off these wins and carry it on to next weekend as we host Western Nebraska (11-2 and ranked 11th in the nation) for a very important conference showdown on Saturday. Coach Winn always has a very well coached team and we know that in order for us to win, we have to be on our 'A' game both games. My girls know they can play with anybody and I am sure they are looking forward to the showdown with Western on Saturday."

The Trojans (9-5) will play at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 13 against Western Nebraska and then play a make-up game with Dawson (weather permitting) on Sunday, March 14 at 10 a.m. at Southside Park. They will then venture to Arizona over spring break for an 8-game series with Arizona schools.
