Trojans split with Riders

Trinidad State played a pair of games with the Luna Rough Riders in Las Vegas, New Mexico last weekend and earned a split on the trip. It was the fifth and sixth times the two teams have met in the past couple of weeks. TSJC swept Luna in four games played in Pueblo in late February.

Game one saw the Trojans get out to an early 2-0 lead only to see the Riders fight back to tie it at 2-2. The TSJC hitters wouldn’t be outdone however as they belted 14 hits in the contest and tagged Luna for a total of eight runs. Trinidad picked up their ninth win of the season in the 8-4 victory. Bo McLavey picked up his third win of the season in relief. Phil Bailey, Derek DiCarlo and Nick Bachono each had three hits in the game.

Game two saw Luna jump out to a big 4-0 lead after the first inning. The Trojans brought three runs across in the second inning on a three-run blast by Vinnie Mattivi but would never get any closer as the Riders went on to win 11-5. Jake Anderson had a pair of hits in the loss.

“Luna is as tough a place to win as any,” commented Coach Scott Douglas. “Beating them five of six without really playing at home is a positive for us. They have a team that keeps at it no matter what. We were a bit inconsistent on the mound and on defense. No excuses, we'll fix what we can and keep putting guys out there to get playing time. We won't use weather or any other excuse for our inconsistency; it is a ‘W’ or an ‘L’ at the end of the day. If a team cannot deal with adversity, no matter the source, it is not a playoff team. Our guys are dealing with it pretty well so far so we'll just keep plugging away.”

“Offensively I thought we showed some improvement with more balls in play and less strikeouts. Of the 75 plate appearances we only had one strikeout looking.”

“We got 10 guys work pitching wise, Landon Adelman got his first college action pitching a perfect sixth, which is very valuable when it comes to experience and confidence.”

“We are excited to open up conference play this weekend. Hopefully we'll catch a break in the weather, we'll see. The weather has been the toughest opponent to figure out so far.”

TSJC, now 9-6, is scheduled to meet McCook on Saturday and Northeastern on Sunday. The doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 12:30 both days.
