Second Annual Alumni Softball Scrimmage this weekend

Trinidad State Junior College Softball Coach Steve Swazo will get his first look at this year’s softball team when the Lady Trojans host the second annual alumni scrimmage on Saturday, August 28 at Southside Park. The doubleheader, beginning at noon, will feature the Lady Trojans playing against former TSJC softball players in a relaxed scrimmage.

This year, Coach Swazo will bring in 13 new freshmen to compliment six returning sophomores and is excited to see what he has as they have been practicing for a week.

“On paper, we should be a team that should contend for a regional championship,” the TSJC coach said. “We have some new players that have come from some great high school programs and also some very good travel teams. It really will come down to staying away from the injury bug and making sure that we hit the weight room hard all year and work on what we need to do in the cage to be ready when our spring schedule begins in February. Being able to get in 20 or so scrimmages against Division II schools during the fall semester will only make us a better team come spring. It will allow me to evaluate our team and also allow our players to get looked at by Division II schools.”

The Lady Trojans are coming off their third consecutive winning season and set a new school record a year ago with 33 victories. They played in the Region IX Championship game for the second straight year.

“We have some high expectations from this team,” Swazo said. “Our returning sophomores know what it feels like to get so close last year and fall short. I know the incoming freshmen also want to achieve that elusive goal and that is to win the Region and qualify for the college world series.”

This fall, the Lady Trojans will host the alumni on Saturday, August 28, with the first game at noon and the second game at 2 p.m. The following week, they host Luna College on Friday September 3 at Southside Park with game time set for 1 p.m. After that, they are on the road at UCCS on September 11-12, Adams State September 18-19, the Triple Crown tournament September 25-26 and at Luna on October 2.
