Lady Trojans get season underway

Kristen DiPaola The 2010 Trojan volleyball squad got the season underway at the Kick-Off Classic in Lamar this past weekend facing some stiff competition from teams from Texas, Kansas and Wyoming. They faced Clarendon, Seward, Western Wyoming and Dodge City over the course of the two day event.

On Friday the Trojans first match came against the 17th ranked team in the nation, Seward County. The Saints defeated the young Trojans in three sets by scores of 25-12 25-21 and 25-13.

"Seward was definitely an eye opening experience for us,” commented Coach Ellen McGill. “It wasn't our best match, but now we know where we have to be and how to play to be one of the best teams in the country."

Up next was a contest against Dodge City Community College. The Trojans kept the scores close against the Conquistadors but still fell in three sets by scores of 25-22 25-21 and 25-17. Ashleigh Wilson had 10 assists and six aces in the contest and Kristen DiPaola finished with seven kills.

"Dodge City is really tough this year,” said McGill. “We played tougher against them, but it just wasn't enough to get us a "W". I really look forward to facing them again later on this year at the Wyo-Braska Tournament. "

On Saturday the Trojans faced Clarendon College from Texas. The Trojans won their first set of the season but fell in the match in four hard fought sets. The scores were 25-17 25-18 22-25 and 25-22. DiPaola again excelled at the net for the Trojans with 12 kills and a .259 hitting percentage. Chelsea Butler finished with 10 kills and a .261 percentage and Lauren Gadeken dominated the middle with 3.5 blocks and 7 kills. Setter Sydney Wilson had 18 assists in the contest and sophomore Shervonn Johnson finished with 19 digs.

"Clarendon was a match I think we all went in expecting to win. However, Clarendon was a really scrappy team and we had trouble finding open spots on the floor,” commented McGill. “They just outsmarted us. We were able to win the third set but couldn't pull out the match. We are excited to face them again this Saturday. Now we know where Clarendon's weaknesses are and we are definitely ready for a rematch."

The final match for TSJC came against Western Wyoming. The Trojans again got good net play from DiPaola, 10 kills and 2 solo blocks, but were unable to get the win falling in four sets. The final scores were 25-13 25-13 18-25 and 25-16. Jillian Wilkins had six kills and ten digs for the Trojans and Sydney Wilson finished with 3 aces and 12 assists.

"Going into our match against Western Wyoming we knew it was going to be a tough one,” commented the Trojan Coach. “They are very strong team along the net. However, we started off the match with a lot of energy and intensity. We were able to take the third set from them, which I was really proud of. We will face them again at the Wyo-Braksa Tournament as well."

"We progressed as a team throughout the weekend. Each match we improved and I saw more leadership on the court. We finally gelled as a team against Western Wyoming and we started to really execute. Unfortunately we just weren't able to pull out any wins this past weekend. I believe now we finally found confidence in ourselves and teammates and understand what we have to do to start winning games."

The Trojans will see their first home action of the season as the face #12 Frank Phillips at Scott Gym this Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. They will then host Clarendon College on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
