Trojans sweep classic

J Thompson

Sophomore center Juhreece Thompson had a double-double against Frank Phillips finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds

Trinidad State moved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of victories at the 2011 TSJC Classic this past weekend at Scott Gym. The Trojans never trailed in either game as they topped Frank Phillips and Adams State JV.

On Friday against Frank Phillips the Trojans took an early lead but struggled to put the Plainsmen away. Frank Phillips fought back and pulled within one, with possession of the ball and less than two minutes to play. TSJC made the defensive stop when they had to and made their free throws down the stretch to pick up the 74-69 win. Guard Bryant Evens had 20 points to lead the Trojans. Joining Evans in double figures were hot-shooting Devonte Malcolm and sophomore post player Juhreece Thompson. Thompson had 11 rebounds to go along with his 13 points.

The Trojans opened the game up early against a tough Adams State JV. Trinidad went up twenty early but the Grizzlies hung tough trying to cut into the Trojan lead. A second half run, keyed by a thunderous dunk by Devonte Upson, put the game away 72-54. Guard J’my Holloway led Trinidad with 14 points off the bench. Upson added 11 points, Evans had four steals to go with his eight points and Todd Pink pulled down eight rebounds.

Trinidad will head to the Air Force Prep Tournament this weekend. They won’t play at Jim Toupal court until December 6 when they take on New Mexico Military.
