With fall behind them the Trojans look forward to spring success
The fall season is now complete for the Trinidad State Junior College softball team and for Head Coach Steve Swazo it was a very good fall.
“I saw a lot of good things take place this fall with our scrimmages,” Coach Swazo said. “I was very impressed with our pitching as Kaycee Prevedel, Stef Wilkins and Kelli Henry did an outstanding job. The girls played very well and played together as a team. Now we just need to work on a few things this winter to make sure we are ready for the spring season and to challenge for the Region IX Championship. The other good thing is we came away from fall ball without any major injuries so that is always a plus.”
The team had a total of 16 scrimmages this fall facing mainly Division II schools such as Adams State College, New Mexico Highlands University, Fort Lewis College, Chadron State, Metro State, and Black Hills State College along with a few junior colleges. If one was keeping score in the fall, the Lady Trojans would have walked away with a winning record in the fall season.
“I always schedule scrimmages against Division II schools in the fall for two reasons, first is to have my team play some tougher competition and second, to get my girls seen by these colleges so they can possibly receive a scholarship to the next level,” the TSJC coach said. “We hung tough with every school we faced and that says a lot about this team. I know our hitting will come around with the girls taking a lot of cuts over the next couple of months before our real season begins. Our pitchers will continue to work on their spins and to get stronger for the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to putting a team on the field that will contend for a regional title”.
The TSJC Softball team will now hit the weight room and continue to do a lot of hitting and fine tuning to prepare for the upcoming 2012 spring season. Coach Swazo returns seven sophomores along with ten new freshmen that will shoot for the Region title. The Lady Trojans start off the 2012 campaign on February 11 at Luna Community College in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
