Lady Trojans ready to hit the field swinging
After a very successful fall campaign, Trinidad State Junior College softball coach Steve Swazo, in his sixth year with the TSJC, and his Lady Trojans are anxious to get the 2012 softball season underway.
“This is something these girls have been working for since they arrived back in August,” Swazo said. “All the hours they have put in the batting cages, the early morning workouts in the weight room and on the practice field have been to reach one goal and that is to win the Region 9 Championship.”
The Lady Trojans are no stranger to the championship game falling short the past three years and coming off four straight winning seasons, Coach Swazo has a good feeling about this year’s squad.
“Winning a Region 9 Championship is one thing this team has talked about and is dedicating their time and effort into accomplishing this year,” Swazo said. “They know it’s not going to be handed to them and they worked very hard in the off-season to be in a position to play for that title come May.”
The Trojans return six sophomores including First-Team All-Region shortstop Caitlyn Reid and Second-Team designated player Jacqueline Booz. Other players who are expected to make a huge contribution are utility player Kaitlyn Mattila, pitcher Stef Wilkins, outfielder Olivia Bartole and second baseman Haydn Tabola.
“Reid hit 14 homeruns and 50 RBI for us last year and Booz was second in hitting a year ago for us with a batting average of .425 and 39 RBI,” the TSJC coach said. “I am expecting Mattila to have a great year because she is more driven to have a great year. Her season was cut short when she suffered a concussion and missed the last 16 games of our season. Bartole and Tabola are really coming along for us and expect them to contribute a lot for us this spring. Wilkins, our only returning pitcher, will probably miss the opening weekend series because of some tendinitis, but we are expecting her to be ready for us in the circle when we travel to Midland, Texas February 17-18.”
Along with the sophomores, Swazo will have seven freshmen that will get their first taste of collegiate experience this coming weekend when the Trojans open up play at Luna Community College on Saturday, February 11 and then host Garden City Community College of Kansas for a doubleheader on Sunday, February 12 beginning at 1 p.m. at Southside Park.
“We have a good freshman class that know how to compete and will complement our sophomores very well on the field,” Swazo said. “They are ready for the challenges and will do a great job for us.”
The seven freshmen are: Jourdan Ensign (3B/2B from New Mexico), Amanda Garrison (outfielder from Nevada), Ashley Collins (outfielder from California), Kaycee Prevedel (pitcher from Utah) and from Colorado are Kelli Henry (pitcher/1B), Laura Trehal (outfielder) and Alex Moore (outfielder/1B). Also new to the team this year is sophomore Annie Wiley, who played volleyball for TSJC this past season.
The Trojans have more than 60 games scheduled with 24 of those being home games. Among the teams TSJC will play this year are Howard College of Texas (ranked 6th in the nation), Pima Community College of Arizona (ranked 9th), Odessa College of Texas (ranked 16th), and ranked 19th in the nation is Region 9 foe Western Nebraska.
“We definitely are not going to shy away from some good competition,” Swazo said. “In all my years of coaching I am still a believer that to be the best, you need to beat the best and that is why we scheduled the teams we did on our schedule, to see how we compare to some of the best programs in the nation. With our limited number of players (14 on the squad), we just need to stay away from the injury bug and we will be all right. We are very solid at every position and I am very confident that we can play with anyone on our schedule.”
