Lady Trojans look for success in 2011

2011 Lady Trojans

The TSJC Volleyball squad got the 2011 season started on a high note sweeping Garden City in straight sets at the Lamar Tournament this past Friday.

“It was great to start the year off with a win,” commented third-year Head Coach Ellen McGill. “We have more talent and height this year. Also, the fact that we work well together helped up start the year off right. We played four scrimmages in early August and I believe that helped get us ready for the first weekend of play in Lamar.”

The Trojans are led this season by a good group of returning players including 2011 captains Sydney Wilson and Morgan Cahoy. With eight girls returning and eight new freshmen joining the team, how they come together could be critical for their success.

“We have good sophomore leadership this year,” said McGill. “We did a lot of leadership and character building last spring and it has definitely made an impact for us so far. The team is gelling really well. They all really enjoy being around each other and we genuinely care for each other. For the first time since I’ve been here I can say that, so far, we are playing as a team. We have a great group of players who are fun to be around and who all have a passion for the game. They are all committed to helping us build back this program. They all understand what it’s going to take to get where we want to be in the Region.”

Of the eight girls returning from last season five are considered sophomores including setter Sydney Wilson, middle blocker Chelsea Butler, defensive specialist Molly McHenry and outside hitters Alexis McAdam and Stephanie Hunnel. Also adding some experience will be three redshirt-freshmen who were injured early last season and are anxious to contribute. They are Morgan Cahoy, Annie Wiley and Alyssa Hernandez.

The eight freshmen joining the mix bring height and depth to the Trojan roster. Capri Rino and Brigetta Uta’i will play the libero position. Kylie Cornella is a setter. Trinidad’s Jacinta Hoffpauir will hit from the outside and 6’ Rachel Hale, 5’10 Lyndsi Nicaise, 5’10 Allison Rosas and 6’2 Kaylee Johnson will add power at the net.

“Having a large team has its positives and negatives. So far everyone has seen some playing time. Right now we are still evaluating everyone and we are still experimenting with line-ups. We have a lot more depth this year, which is exciting,” McGill commented. “So far we have made a lot of progress. Especially compared to where we were last year at this time. However, we still have a lot of learning to do and a lot of room for improvement. We look very promising. Hopefully we will continue to grow as a team.”

The Trojans (2-3) finished out their first week with losses to Pratt, Chandler-Gilbert and Laramie and another win over Garden City. They will next head to Colby, Kansas this weekend to play four games against Colby, Eastern Wyoming, Dodge City and North Platte. They will see their first home action on September 19 when they host Garden City Community College at Scott Gym.
