Lady Trojans top Otero

Trojans block at the net

TSJC blockers Kaylee Johnson (7) and Alyssa Hernandez (17) send a ball back across the net

The home court at Scott Gym continues to be good to the Lady Trojans as TSJC moved to 2-1 in Region play with a three set victory over the Otero on Tuesday night. In front of a large, rowdy and mostly pink crowd the Trojans made play after play to sweep the Rattlers in straight sets. Most of the crowd was wearing pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.

TSJC jumped out to an early lead dominating the first set with a 25-15 win. Otero was tenacious however as they fought back to take an 11-7 lead early in the second set. TSJC battled to tie it at 12-12 only to see the Rattlers run the lead out again. Trinidad chipped away to tie it at 25-25. The teams exchanged points with the pro-TSJC crowd getting louder with each play. Finally the Trojans put the game away 32-30.

The final set saw the Trojans hold a slight lead throughout finally claiming a 25-22 win. Sophomores Alexis McAdam (8 kills) and Sydney Wilson (5 kills, 18 digs and 13 assists) supplied the spark for the Trojans in the contest. Also making a big impact for TSJC were Alyssa Hernandez (8 kills and a pair of blocks), Capri Rino (23 digs), Kaylee Johnson (7 blocks) and Allison Rosas (5 kills, 4 aces and 13 digs).

“The team is starting to work well together. We have been building more confidence in ourselves and in the team as the season goes along,” commented Coach Ellen McGill. “We finally have that trust on the court which is vital to a team’s success. We just have to keep building and getting better each day. It was nice to get a regional win against Otero. They are always a tough opponent and play their best ball against us.”

TSJC fell to Northeastern last Friday so the Otero win boosted their overall record back to the 500 mark at 13-13 on the season. They are 6-2 at home. The 13 wins are the most the Trojans have had since 2006 when they went 16-25. The Trojans only have two home games left this season. They face the top ranked team in the nation, Western Nebraska, on Thursday. They then won’t be at home again until October 29 when they host Lamar for the final regular season game.
