Volleyball Wrap-up

Kaylee Johnson

Freshman Kaylee Johnson was named All Region and is seventh in the nation in blocks per set

In a region that features perennial national powerhouses Western Nebraska and Northeastern Junior College as well as the tough teams from Lamar, Otero and McCook, Trinidad State is always fighting to keep pace. In recent years the Trojans had fallen back a bit but this year they jumped back in the fray and finished with a third place finish in both regular season and tournament play. The Trojans even challenged the Lady Plainsmen in the second round of the tournament but fell short of the upset.

Capri Rino

Capri Rino finished the season ranked 18 in digs in the nation. She was also named All Region IX

Tournament play started on Thursday in Scottsbluff, Nebraska with Trinidad seeded third. They faced sixth seed McCook in the first round. TSJC easily dispatched the Indians in three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-23. Lyndsi Necaise and Kaylee Johnson combined for 12 kills in the match.

On Friday morning the Trojans got a long day started against Northeastern. Trinidad fell in three hard fought sets 25-20, 25-17 and 25-16. Chelsea Butler had a big game in the middle for Trinidad with five blocks. The Trojans then faced Lamar in an elimination game. The scores were close but Trinidad prevailed in straight sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 to eliminate the Lopes. Alyssa Hernandez had seven blocks and six kills in the match. In their third game of the day the Trojans faced Otero. Again the scores were close but the Trojans swept the match to send the Rattlers home 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23. Setter Sydney Wilson had 30 assists in the match and libero Capri Rino finished with 35 digs.

Jacinta Hoffpauir

Freshman Jacinta Hoffpauir, who played her high school ball at Trinidad High, was also named to the All Region IX Team

On the final day of the Tournament the Trojans faced Northeastern again and were eliminated by the Plainswomen. Western Nebraska then defeated Northeastern in the title match to claim their thirteenth straight Region IX title. They will now prepare for a run to try to defend their National Title from 2010.

The Trojans had three players named All-Region and three named to the Region IX Tournament Team. The players that are All Region are freshmen Capri Rino, Kaylee Johnson and Jacinta Hoffpauir. Named to the tournament team were Rino, Johnson and sophomore Chelsea Butler. TSJC was awarded the Sheila R. Worley Sportsmanship Award for the Region IX South division.

TSJC also garnered some national recognition this season. Kaylee Johnson is ranked seventh in nation for blocks per set with 1.26 blocks per set and 178 total blocks for the season. Alyssa Hernandez is ranked 32 with 1.02 blocks per set and 108 total blocks for the season. Capri Rino is ranked 18 in nation for digs per set with 4.92 digs per set and 458 total digs on the season. Johnson’s 178 blocks puts her in third place in the TSJC record books. Sydney Wilson broke her own single season TSJC record for service points with 430 this season. Kylie Cornella surpassed Wilson for first all-time with 441 service points on the year. Wilson is now the career leader in service points with 828, surpassing Cory Tixier, who held the top spot since 1996.

The Trojans finished the season with a 20-22 record, the most wins for a Trojan team since they went 29-18 in 2002. They will return a good core from this year’s team and look to challenge the top two teams for a Region IX title in 2012.
