Trojans fall in 2011 opener

Sophomore point guard Tameka Manning drives to the basket against Frank Phillips Tuesday night at Scott Gym.
Trinidad State Women’s basketball opened their 2011 season in front of the home crowd at Scott Gym but ended up falling to hot shooting Frank Phillips 75-55 on Tuesday evening.
The Trojans played tough early and, using the post skills of 6’2 Destiny Bragman, were able to pull out to an early lead over the Lady Plainsmen. Frank Phillips fought back at tied the score at 20 midway through the half. The first of two scoring droughts then struck the Trojans. TSJC’s shots quit falling and Frank Phillips opened it up from behind the three point line to make an 11 point run. After leading a good portion of the half Trinidad suddenly found themselves heading into the locker room down 39-26.
TSJC came out of the break fired up as they used some great hustle plays to cut the lead to five, 51-46, midway through the half. During the Trojan run Tameka Manning, Justine Gallegos, Shephanie Knowles and Jaclyn Becker all had big buckets. Unfortunately the momentum ran out and the Trojans fell into their second shooting drought of the game. Frank Phillips hit a pair of big threes as they extended the lead back out to 64-48 with six minutes left. Trinidad made a last run but ended up falling short 75-55.
“We are a young team and sometimes these things happen to young teams,” commented Coach Rich Holden. “We didn't get outhustled on the floor. I was proud of our girls for that. We do need to try and get it into the posts more. We were working the ball in early with some success and then got away from it.”
Trinidad was led in scoring by Manning’s 12 points. Becker added 9 points from off the bench and Bragman finished with 8, all coming early in the game. Kylee Crumley was a force in the paint as she picked up 10 rebounds. Ten Lady Trojans scored in the contest. For the Lady Plainsmen LaChrista Nash scored 21 and Laura Martinez put in 20. Frank Phillips hit 12 3-pointers in the win.
The Lady Trojans will travel to La Junta this weekend for action before returning for the TSJC Classic next Friday and Saturday at Scott Gym.
