Lady Trojans Split at Classic

Tameka Manning

Sophomore point guard Tameka Manning led the Trojans in scoring both nights at the 2011 TSJC Classic at Scott Gym.

The Trinidad State Lady Trojans moved their record to 2-3 on the season as they picked up a split at the 2011 TSJC Classic last weekend.

On Friday evening the Trojans took on the Lady Indians from McCook Community College. TSJC found themselves down three at the half. The Trojans fell further behind early in the second half but staged a furious comeback in the closing ten minutes. Three steals in a row followed by layups and some three point plays put the Trojans on top and had the crowd into the game. The Indians kept their calm and managed to retake the lead late. McCook held on down the stretch for a 65-59 victory. Tameka Manning led the Trojans with her in-your-face defense and 11 points. She also pulled down five rebounds.

The following evening TSJC battled Adams State JV. At times the Trojans looked sluggish but they put together enough offense to pull away late and claim the 59-50 win. Manning again led the Trojans in scoring with 12. She was joined in double figures by Jaclyn Becker who finished with 10. Stephanie Knowles played a good game despite foul trouble and finished with 10 rebounds and 5 points. Destiny Bragman dominated the middle with 12 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

“Our defense is improving every night out, the girls are playing hard,” commented Head Coach and TSJC Athletic Director Rich Holden. “Offensively we are turning the ball over way too much and not shooting a very good percentage from two, three or the free-throw line.”

TSJC (2-3) will next head to Colby, Kansas on November 22 for a game with Colby Community College. They will then face McCook, in McCook, Nebraska, the next night. Trinidad will return home for a game against Air Force Prep on November 29 at 5p.m.
